Offshoot Beer (The Bruery) Escape [it's your everyday West Coast IPA]

What the brewers say

“Clean, crisp, and clear, this concoction of Mosaic, Strata, Simcoe, and Amarillo hops offers notes of tropical passion fruit, grapefruit zest, and pine.”

What our panel thought

“Sweet herbaceous blend on the nose, black tea and cannabis. Touches of citrus underneath. Sweet malt flavor brings out more cannabis, more citrus, lime zest.”

What our editors thought

“Classic, slightly musty with a bit of orange and aged malt in the aroma. Round body with a hint of oily citrus zest, and a well-placed zippy upper-register bitterness with staccato notes that don’t reverberate.”

pFriem Family Brewers IPA

“Big hop aroma with a woody, piney, lightly citrus pith punch. Light POM and peach—almost a little plum. Flavor has a big up-front piney-citrus bite that leads to a crisp, bitter, drying finish. A nice underlying malt sweetness ties together the hops and bitterness. Piney, citrusy hops linger.”

Melvin Brewing Eureka (House of Flying Barrels) West Coast Drip

“Sulfury diesel-fuel hop aroma dominates. Light grapefruit, lemon, and pine notes follow. Simple but defined malt backbone of biscuit and pie crust. Businesslike bitterness. Spicy black pepper, anise, light diesel, pine, lemon, and grassy notes in the flavor. Dry finish with a firm lingering bitterness.”

Offshoot Beer (The Bruery) Unwind (You Earned This Hoppy Pils)

Fresh, piney grapefruit nose, with a little honey-malt underneath. In the flavor, a burst of crystal malt sweetness with good grapefruit-citrus hops. Well balanced sweetness and hop-bitterness. Crisp, clean brightness showcases the hops. Doesn't try too hard. Smoothed out; no raw IPA edges.
